Juhani Aaltonen is one of the major figures in Finnish jazz, a musician whose playing has carried technical clarity and spiritual weight side by side for decades. The sound of his flute is at once airy and deep, and it is there that Aaltonen’s place in Finnish jazz history becomes unmistakable. Even now, seeing him on stage still feels like witnessing an exceptional presence.
His career stretches from key Finnish jazz recordings on Love Records to work with Tasavallan Presidentti and the singular albums he made for Leo Records in the 1970s, including Prana and Springbird. In recent years, his work has also found renewed attention among younger listeners, as the history of spiritual jazz has been heard with fresh ears. His collaboration with the free jazz group PLOP also brought him an Emma Award in 2024.
The line-up of the Juhani Aaltonen Quartet says a great deal about the scale of the music itself. On piano is Iro Haarla, on bass Ulf Krokfors, and on drums Reiska Laine. This is not simply a chance to see a legend on stage, but to hear music that remains alive and alert, shaped by listening, space, and long experience.
