Jimi Tenor is one of the true outliers in Finnish music and one of the artists who helped open international space for Finnish experimental music in the 1990s. In the early years of Sähkö Recordings, Tenor, alongside Pan Sonic, helped shape the direction that made Finnish electronic music internationally compelling. He later joined Warp Records at a time when the label was reshaping the future of electronic music alongside names like Aphex Twin and Autechre.
Tenor’s significance is not limited to one era or one scene. His career has moved through electronic music, jazz, funk, afrobeat and psychedelic pop with exceptional freedom. That can also be heard in the range of collaborators he has worked with, including Tony Allen, UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, Edward Vesala, Kabu Kabu, Jori Hulkkonen, Nicole Willis and Maurice Fulton.
Jimi Tenor Band makes it clear that in Tenor’s case, this is not simply a long career but music that is still in motion. Released in November 2025, Selenites, Selenites! is the band’s first studio album, and alongside Tenor, the lineup features Ekow Alabi Savage, Eeti Nieminen, Heikki Tuhkanen and Lauri Kallio.
