Jukka Eskola and Teppo Mäkynen’s Drum’n’Brass brings together jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music with the brass band and second line traditions of the American South. The joint project by trumpeter Eskola and drummer Mäkynen is built on the constant interplay between rhythm and horns, where precision and physical drive move side by side.
The music is composed and arranged by Eskola and Mäkynen, two long-standing figures in Finnish jazz whose collaboration combines a deep sense of groove, stylistic confidence, and an ability to shape large-scale music without unnecessary weight. They are joined by the nine-piece Guards Brass Collective, assembled from the Finnish Guards Band, whose sound brings both orchestral force and agility to the performance.
Drum’n’Brass draws from tradition, but its perspective is firmly in the present. The street-level rhythms of New Orleans, the openness of jazz, and the production-minded thinking of contemporary rhythm music meet in a form that feels both carefully constructed and immediately alive.
