The Other Sound x Sun Effects program announced
Produced together with the festival’s long-standing partner Sun Effects, Flow Festival’s experimental music program, The Other Sound, invites the crowd to pause and remain in the present moment amid the festival buzz.
The old power plant of Suvilahti is the largest of the industrial structures in the festival area. The wide-open, thousand-square-meter hall has the distinction of serving as Flow Festival’s sanctuary for The Other Sound program. This year, the program shines a light on experimental music, sound art and contemporary dance. In addition, Flow Festival's long-term partner Sun Effects, will curate a collection of topical video and light artworks for the space, bring a number of VJ artists to the event and is responsible for the light design of the hall.
On Flow Friday, The Other Sound x Sun Effects will feature composer and vocalist Arushi Jain, playing modular synthesisers, and Scottish bagpipe player Brìghde Chaimbeul, who has collaborated with, among others, fellow Flow performer Caroline Polachek. In addition, the Friday program will feature violinist and composer Meriheini Luoto, who interfaces with her instruments in wild and adventurous ways, and Mikko Sarvanne Garden, recently recognised with the Teosto award, drawing on both contemporary vocal music, soft jazz sounds and sound art.
On Saturday, The Other Sound x Sun Effects offers sound artist and composer Maya Shenfeld's masterful sound sculptures and visionary compositions, as well as a performance by the Kaukolampi / LRXY ensemble, in which the deep and cosmic music of Timo Kaukolampi is combined organically and interactively with the minimalist imagery and sound of the audiovisual duo LRXY. On Saturday, at The Other Sound, you can also experience the collision of contemporary music and dance art when NYKY Ensemble and the dance group Liisa Pentti +Co bring their work Ref2022, based on Brian Eno's composition Reflection, to the stage. The domestic band The New Boyfriends, playing scrap metal noise oozing with joie de vivre, will also perform in the space on Flow Saturday.
On the festival Sunday, The Other Sound x Sun Effects stage will feature the captivating performances of sound artist Claire Rousay and accordion artist and composer Mario Batkovic. Sunday's domestic additions to the program are drummer Teppo Mäkynen and keyboardist Nikita Rafaelov with their Teddy Rok: Atonal Drums project, and Mika Kallio Gong Odyssey, swaying between ambient and improvised music.
The Flow Talks program opens each festival day of The Other Sound x Sun Effects with a daily changing theme. The Flow Talks program will be announced in the summer.
