LiYilei
Li Yilei is a Chinese artist and composer based in London, with a background in fine art and sound art. Their work explores alternative listening modes, focusing on tacit knowledge, the transience of existence, and the voices of the unheard, particularly those with disabilities. Yilei, who is on the autism spectrum, incorporates sound, found materials, movements, and experimental scores to explore sensory issues and selective mutism.
Yilei’s sound-making process involves a variety of instruments, including violin, theremin, field recordings, and custom-designed instruments. Since 2017, they have composed for film, theatre, and dance, and performed internationally. Their work, often blending tranquility with more abrasive elements, has been showcased in venues like the Barbican Centre, Lincoln Centre, and Tai Kwun Contemporary.
