Habibi Funk is the record label and DJ alias of Berlin-based Jannis Stürtz, shining light on Far-Eastern and North African funk, soul, jazz and disco from the 1950s to the 1980s. His interest in the genre began on his work trip to Casablanca, Morocco, and the first releases on Habibi Funk were out in 2015. The label’s catalogue includes various styles, from old movie soundtracks to modern disco, and the geographical area stretches from Morocco to Sudan and Lebanon. As a DJ, Stürtz regularly plays in the countries he releases music from, but recently he has also toured Central Europe and North America. He is a resident DJ at the famous Jazz Cafe in London and has lately played in festivals from Primavera Barcelona to the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival.
