Devo is undeniably one of the greatest cult bands in the world. Founded in the early 1970s, the pioneer of art rock, new wave and geek pop has created a massive legacy with their super-stylized image, civilized humour and intellectual sociality, which will only be understood to its full extent years from now. Devo made their name in the American punk and art scenes of the late 70s when David Bowie famously called Devo “the band of the future”. 1980s album Freedom of Choice finally broke them into the mainstream. Songs like Whip It and Freedom of Choice weren’t just MTV hits–they advanced Devo’s theory of de-evolution, which was that people would regress to conformist automatons, and corporate and literal machinery would consume free will.
