Aavikko (FIN)
Flow yard, August 18th 6:45 pm
Formed ten years ago, Aavikko has gained a reputation as a hilarious live band amongst the fans of rock, pop and electronic music alike. Well noted also internationally by those in the know, the band’s fans included the late radio legend John Peel. In their music the three-strong group combines elements from surf rock to electro and disco to techno with a straight lo-fi aesthetic. Original, simultaneously silly, funny and indisputably ingenious groove is designed to be danced to.

Acid Kings (FIN)
It was said that Acid Kings would blaze the trail to new coming of real oldschool acid – and they did. Though Acid Kings are still the best-kept secret of the finnish underground techno scene, they are also the trio at the heart and source of the ongoing international acid revival. ??They are the men without a past, perpetually stuck in 1989... The Kings are a true hardboiled oldschool acid/techno trio coming from the grey backyards of Helsinki eastside ghettoes. Their amazing 303 skills & tricks have had devastating effects on dancefloors due their smash releases on Sähkö, Keys of Life and F-Comm labels and their outrageous banging live acts for select audiences in underground events all over the world.

Aril Brikha (SWE)
Valkoinen sali upstairs, August 19th 2:30 am
Aril Brikha is a Swedish producer, born in Iran, recording for a Detroit label. Given such far-flung origins, he's naturally been able to bring together fans of similarly disparate styles: jazzy house, minimalist Detroit techno and more experimental listening music.
A fan of Detroit techno, he sent a demo to some of his favorite record labels stateside after not getting any response in Sweden. Before he knew it Derrick May released an EP featuring the track Groove La Chord, which became a huge hit. Brikha’s debut album Deeparture in Time was the first major full-length by a single artist on the legendary Transmat label. His live sets are highly rated, consisting of his own take on Detroit techno with special soul and funk to it.
Candi Staton (USA)
Flow yard, August 19th 9:00 pm
The Grammy award winning soul singer Candi Staton is known for her classic Southern Soul of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s and classy disco pearls like Young Hearts Run Free (1976) and Victim (1978). She has been compared to Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight and earned the moniker First Lady Of Southern Soul.
With the enthusiastic reception of a recent compilation and a new solo album His Hands, released this year, Candi Staton has returned to the forefront of true Soul music. Edan with guest Dagha (USA)
Kuudes linja, August 19th 0:00 am (midnight)
Edan makes hiphop like it was 1986 again: he never fails to innovate and regards rap as an art form instead of business. Edan has created his own branch of gritty, even psychedelic hiphop that has earned him a loyal fanbase on both sides of the Atlantic.
The MC, DJ and producer (and self-appointed "Quincy Jones of lo-fi") has two highly regarded albums, one EP and a string of singles under his belt. His most recent album, Beauty and the Beat, from 2005, earned five-star reviews and drew comparisons from Pearls Before Swine to Ultramagnetic MC's.
Edan is also a prolific DJ. In his mixtapes he's delved deep into obscure 1980's "random rap" and even made a mix based solely on the omnipresent drum loop from James Brown's "Funky Drummer".
His gig at Flow06 will be his first in Finland.

Gravenhurst (UK)
Flow yard, August 18th 8:45 pm
British Gravenhurst is one of the recent rock-oriented additions to the artist roster of electronic music’s pioneering label Warp Records. Started as solo project of Nick Talbot, the group has recently expanded to a trio. At the same time the sound of the band has developed from minimalistic new folk to a more holistic expression, where Talbot’s bright singing tone is combined with imposing walls of sound, and where the delicate folk is balanced by roaring rock passages.
Gravenhurst’s music is characterized by a deep respect to history. At the same time it radiates a passion for creating something totally new, which is apparent in the band’s eager development of their sound.

Happy Mondays DJ Set featuring Bez (UK)
Flow yard, August 18th 9:45 pm
Along with the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays were the leaders of the late-'80s/early-'90s dance club-influenced Manchester indie rock scene. The Mondays' music relied on the sound and rhythm of house music, spiked with '70s soul licks and swirling '60s psychedelia. It was bright, colorful music that had fractured melodies that never quite gelled into cohesive songs. Nevertheless, Happy Mondays left behind a very influential legacy, apparent in everyone from dance bands like the Chemical Brothers to rock & rollers like Oasis.
The Happy Mondays “groove & vibes controller” Bez has recently been carving himself a successful career as a DJ. The Flow Festival posse is thrilled to present the first ever DJ show of the legendary Mondays character in Helsinki.
In his home country Bez, the UK Celebrity Big Brother winner, is so popular as a DJ performer that one of his shows had to be pulled in May when the euphoric crowd almost started a riot. Bez was doing a DJ set in East Yorkshire, as part of a tour of clubs around the UK and 2,000 fans poured into the small venue. When Bez started playing out security felt obliged to step in and whisk him away for his own safety.
Hearin' Aid (SWE)
Flow yard, August 19th 3:15 pm
Dubbed the leaders of Swedish leftfield hip hop, Hearin’ Aid is a duo of Aaron Phiri and Damon Frost, working together since 1995.
Performing new, multicultural nordic music, the duo’s combined sound is interesting, which is not a surprise taking into account their backrounds. Born in Los Angeles, Frost grew up in Hawaii and Berkley, before his dance career led him to Stockholm in 1986. Aaron Phiri arrived to Sweden from Lusaka, Zambia in 1990. Their sound and especially their explosive live performances are highly regarded.
Helsinki Ghetto Bass Patrol (FIN)
Valkoinen sali, downstairs August 19th, 1:00 am
Founded in 2004, Helsinki Ghetto Bass Patrol is a northern tribute to the ghettotech music originating from Detroit, USA. Their performances are brutally intense dance music and hi-energy shows that combine humourous and highly visual live-performaces with high class deejay and mc skills.
The team of two MCs and one DJ is known from various undergound hiphop/dancehall/drum&bass/grime projects. David Not So Hot (Janne Hyttinen) has been an mc for 10 years in rap groups like Ceebrolistics and Murmurecordings. Falafel Kungen (Tommi Liikka) is also a veteran from several projects in the Finnish rap scene and Street Jesus (Pirkka Hartikainen) has been an active DJ in the Helsinki club scene for a long time.
Henrik Schwarz (GER)
Valkoinen sali, upstairs, August 19th 11:45 pm
House music producer Henrik Schwarz is a longtime veteran in the German music scene, well known for both his DJ and live performances as well as highly regarded releases.
Starting as a DJ, since the mid-nineties he has developed a magical touch for his live sound. The option to use laptops instead of records took Henrik one step further, playing dj-sets with computers long before anybody else was doing it. Now he is more often seen playing live than carrying records, and his set is regarded as one of the best laptop live sets around.
Jazzanova DJ set (GER)
Valkoinen sali, downstairs, August 19th 11:30 pm
Berlin's Jazzanova collective formed in 1995. The six-piece group shared a common goal of blending their collected inspirations together to create a new, sophisticated sound, with debts owed to nearly every form of dance-oriented music from the past several decades.
After series of ground breaking 12” releases and remixes to many of the greatest talents in the contemporary music scene “In Between”, Jazzanova's ambitious (to a fault) debut full-length arrived in 2002. Allegedly the culmination of five years worth of work, the album sustained the group's reputation with tracks full of meticulous beatcraft. In 2005, the jazz label Blue Note gave the group access to their classic back catalog for the double mix CD Blue Note.
Flow06 will present a Jazzanova DJ set of eclectic selection of techno jazz and fresh sounds from the Sonar Kollektiv massive.

José González (SWE)
Flow yard, August 20th 8:00 pm
Swedish José González is one of the brightest rising stars emerging from the Nordic countries. The singer-songwriter with argentinian roots achieved considerable success already three years ago with his debut album “Veneer”, but his major international breakthrough has happened very recently.
Released internationally earlier this year, “Heartbeats” went straight to the top 10 in the British single charts, and now distributed more widely too, the album has been a huge success as well. Sold out tours and appearances in TV shows Top of the pops and Conan O’Brien’s Late night have produced a growing number of thrilled fans on both sides of the Atlantic.
Born in 1978, González’s emotional music and delicate delivery has been compared to legendary Nick Drake. On the other hand his music is influenced by seemingly different sources as bossa nova from his father’s native Argentina and Joy Division. His skillful playing has hints of flamenco and classical guitar, and intimate vocal delivery is the icing on the cake. Resulting music is highly original, touching and subtle.

The Soundsystem is not just records though. The selections mix with live-elements, in other words three laptops and a whole load of echo gear centered around one mixer.

Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas (NOR)
Valkoinen sali, upstairs, August 18th 10:30 pm
After creating a worldwide buzz with their concept of “Space Disco”, Lindstrom and Prins Thomas are rapidly becoming one of the biggest new names on the electronic dance circuit. Hans Peter Lindstrøm and Thomas M. Hermansen (aka prins thomas) are two young norwegian guys who are possibly the most in-demand leftfield electronic remixers and producers right now, creating between them a prodigious amount of musical madness. They both work on individual tracks and EPs, remix the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Roxy Music and LCD Soundsystem, run their own record labels, DJ and still find time to work together on remixing and make joint albums together.
At Flow06 the duo will do a laptop live performance combined with DJ:ing.

Moodymann (USA)
Valkoinen sali, upstairs, August 19th 12:45 am
A Detroit native and a prolific house/techno producer, Moodymann aka Kenneth Dixon Jr. bridges the gap between electronic dance music, soul and disco. Listening to his music reveals that the true roots of house and techno are in soul and gospel music.
Moodymann releases most of his music on hard to find 12” singles, but his full-length albums have garnered positive enthusiastic reviews also in mainstream media, from his debut Silentintroduction (1997) to 2004’s Black Mahogani.
An enigmatic personality who avoids publicity and one who’s performances in Europe are far and between, Moodymann is performing in Finland for the very first time at Flow06.
Mugison (ISL)
Flow yard, August 18th 7:45 pm
Mugison is an Icelandic electro-folk troubadour hailing from the remote town of Isafjordur in the West Fjords of Iceland.
After doing three albums with his laptop and gaining 10 kilos during the pregnacy of Mugibaby, Mugison decided it was time for a change. So he recruited a flesh'n'blood rythm section, Arnar on drums and Gudni on bass. They have been in the garage practising and have helped Mugison lose the 10 kilos. His wife Runa Ezradottir (Mugimama) and long term "partner in crime" Birgir Birgisson (Mugimaster) are still working closely with him. Mugison is currently busy working on his third studio album and the soundtrack for Myrin, the latest film by Baltasar Kormakur, director of A little trip to heaven. Both are scheduled for release in the fall.
Mugison will perform at Flow06 as a trio with his new rhythm section.
“…Mugison, a former Icelandic sailor, whose solo performance – he played wild, crashing guitar while mixing vocals and distorted breathing through a laptop – was a meld of the recklessly shambolic (his computer crashed twice), endearing love songs and epic, disturbing soundscapes out of the Barents sea. Mugison's electro-shock body movements and raging absurdities only heightened the feeling that absolutely anything could happen on stage, an increasingly rare thing in our pre-programmed, pre-packaged musical age. – The Independent (UK)
Natha / Vri-il (ITA)
Natha / Vri-il is the stage name of Bologna-based Francesco Cavaliere. Performing solo in Flow, Cavaliere is a member of Vri-il trio, whose music is characterized by hypnotic improvisation and the use of peculiar instruments. As their influences they list bands like Coil and Death In June, as well as contemporary classical composer Georgy Ligeti. At the Flow festival Cavaliere's instruments include wooden boxes, a bass tuned with metal plates and the feedback of c-cassettes. Visual extra will be provided by a miked wooden board, on which Finnish artist Elsa Salonen will draw, thus forming one of the sound sources to be used.

Quintessence with Strings (FIN)
Flow yard, August 20th 5:00 pm
Quintessence started out as a three-person project in a Helsinki basement-studio. Guitarist Aki Haarala and DJ/Programmer Jouni Helminen aka DharmaOne asked vocalist Emma Salokoski to sing on a couple of tunes.
For live gigs the band was extended to a six-piece. After a relatively short search-period the right people were found (Mikko Kaakkuriniemi, Drums; Heikki Laine, Bass; Verneri Pohjola, Trumpet and Tuomo Prättälä, Keyboards). The band developed such a distinctive and strong groove, that beat-guru DharmaOne decided to step aside, leaving room for a more organic sound.
In November 2002 Quintessence released its full-length debut "Talk Less Listen More" on Finland's hippest indie-label, Texicalli Records. Their unique mixture of soul, jazz, funk and Scandinavian cool found it's way into the hearts, ears and record collections of music lovers and critics alike. September 2004 Quintessence came out with their second album "5 am". This instant classic takes the Quintessence-formula to a new level of deepness, adding sweet soul sounds of the seventies and echoes of pulsating afro-beat.
Flow06 will present the premiere of “Quintessence with Strings”, a unique show specially arranged for the Flow event.

Karjalainen as well as producing them and several other top domestic acts such as Lemonator and Ismo Alanko. The Five Corners Quintet + One (FIN)
Flow yard, August 20th 6:30 pm
The Five Corners Quintet is one of world’s hottest dance floor jazz outfits of the moment. In studio the Five Corners Quintet is a contemporary project dictated by producer Tuomas Kallio. The Five Corners Quintet performing live is another story. The live band is a phenomenal jazz quintet — or at times a sextet or even bigger — that can appeal both to a critical seated jazz audience and a dancing club crowd. TFCQ core live band is featuring trumpet player Jukka Eskola, baritone/tenor saxophonist Timo Lassy, pianist Mikael Jakobsson, bass player Antti Lötjönen and drummer Teppo "Teddy Rok" Mäkynen.
TFCQ debut album “Chasin’ The Jazz Gone By” has been released in Scandinavia (SonyBMG), Europe (Ricky-Tick/Time-Warp), USA (Milan/WEA) and Japan (Columbia) where TFCQ received the prestigious Adlib magazine “International New Star of 2005” award and toured sold out Blue Note clubs in four cities. The Five Corners Quintet will be touring excessively in Europe and Japan during 2006 and a US tour is being planned around the end of the year.
Following last year’s mind-blowing Mark Murphy special TFCQ will play new set for the first time at Flow06. The program consists of the tracks of Ricky-Tick Record’s forth coming compilation that digs out the very best of Scandinavian modern jazz of the 50s and 60s.

Tortured Soul (USA)
Valkoinen sali, upstairs, August 19th 10:30 pm
In the spring of 2001, drummer/vocalist John-Christian Urich, keyboardist Ethan White, and bassist JKriv got together in Urich's basement studio in Brooklyn and Tortured Soul sound was born; a blend of soulful song-writing, skillful production, and raw live energy.
Floating somewhere between electronica and live, Tortured Soul offer us a new concept in the world of house music: no DJs, no loops, no sequencers. All the music is preformed completely live. The instrumentation is simple and organic: drums, electric bass, vintage keys, and vocals. It is music filled with thick layers of heartfelt soul, danceable grooves and infectious hooks. As best described by Gilles Peterson, "The future of House music!"
2005 proved to be a huge year for Tortured Soul, tearing it up at the festivals, clubs and on the radio airwaves around the world. It is Tortured Soul's pioneering brand of live house that has captured the attention of all who have experienced their music.
"Tortured Soul’s 'Don't Hold Me Down' sounds like a happy track I'd wake up to on a Saturday morning when sun is coming through the window. I like the Roy Ayers feeling to it."

TV-Resistori (FIN)
Flow yard, August 18th 6:00 pm
Melting many hearts along the way, Turku-based TV-Resistori made the indie crowd dance years before it became fashionable like it’s now, once again. The group’s irresistible, natural and delicate music is based on childlike melodies, as heard both in the singing of the two vocalists Päivi and Yrjö, and played on synthesizers. Influences from Mouse On Mars to Stereolab can be heard, but the band’s lo-fi-sound is original and it’s Finnish lyrics witful.TV-Resistori is at the same time funny and touching – and on it’s best performing live.
U Brown (JAM) & Sound Explosion Riddim Section (FIN)
Flow yard, August 19th 4:15 pm
Jamaican deejay U Brown is one of the dancehall culture’s biggest stars. Since his debut album Satta Dread in 1977, U Brown has achieved considerable success and made a reputation as one of the most original deejays to emerge from Jamaica since the legendary U-Roy. On his recordings he has worked with Bunny Lee, King Tubby and Prince Jammy to name a few. During the past few years he has mainly performed in Jamaica and given only selected appearances in the US and Europe.
Sound Explosion Riddim Section is a Helsinki based rhythm section, consisting of musicians familiar from groups such as Soul Captain Band. Performing alongside U Brown are also three top Finnish vocal artists. Most well known of the three, Paarma released his “Pidä liekkis” debut album in 2005 to great acclaim. A fresher talent on the mic is Bongo Rhino, specializing in older Jamaican styles and sharp improvising. Flexible voiced singjay Raappana was voted the best Finnish artist of the year 2005 in a ballot put together by the Fi-Reggae organization.
