Flow Festival’s The Other Sound Showcases an Impressive Program of Domestic and International Experimental Music
Flow Festival is proud to announce the exciting program for The Other Sound venue, featuring a captivating selection of both Finnish and international artists and performers. This year’s program pushes the boundaries of experimental music, bringing together a diverse range of sounds from spiritual jazz and sonic rituals to immersive performances and innovative classical compositions. The performances promise an unforgettable experience for those seeking to explore the cutting edge of music.
In 2025, The Other Sound will evolve further by returning to the festival’s iconic Kattilahalli. This year, the unique industrial building offers an exceptional environment for immersive experiences, as the new circular stage provides a possibility to witness the experimental program in a completely new way. Additionally, in collaboration with Flow’s technical partner Creative Technology, the performances will include a 30-meter-wide video projection, covering the venue’s walls and interiors and turning the place into a breathtaking spatial artwork.
In the program, born in New York and having grown up in Southern India, the singer ganavya – heralded by the Wall Street Journal as ”among modern music’s most compelling vocalists” – interprets spiritual jazz and South Asian spiritual music with a voice that knows no boundaries. The Indian-born and US-based singer Surabhi Saraf presents her alter ego Apni, who channels voice, breath, and surrounding sounds into an immersive ritual. BThe Helsinki-based pianist, lecturer Keval Shah performs a piano recital on the works by the Indian-American composer Reena Esmail, whose compositions combine Hindustanian ragas and Western harmonies.
Furthermore, The Other Sound presents fine-crafted sounds, as the composer, drummer, and electronic musician Andrea Belfi tunes the audience to hear his meditative frequency with flowing rhythms and multilayered textures, which evolve into percussion-led, meditative frequencies. The pianist Nicoletta Favari and the percussionist Christopher Salviton join their forces as Passepartout Duo, taking their audience to the world of minimalism and self-built electroacoustic instruments. Sharing the same DIY aesthetic, the artist, composer Li Yilei utilises ready-made-materials in her own instruments, which she uses to explore the challenges and possibilities of senses.
Also featured in the program is Ada Aik, the alter ego of the Finnish musician Karin Mäkiranta, whose conceptual project 5 Hours of Light merges performance art and music in a multidimensional experience. Collaborating with a girl choir of 60 singers – conducted by Reijo Aittokumpu – and the scent artist Salla Keskinen, Ada Aik’s performance turns into a unique, immersive journey that blurs lines between art forms.
Joining The Other Sound’s domestic acts, the collaboration between Antti Lötjönen, a leading Finnish jazz bassist, and Kalle Kalima, a Berlin-based guitarist, promises an exciting exploration of jazz and improvisation, while Harri Kuusijärvi, a groundbreaking accordionist, and the media artist Arttu Nieminen, explore the possibilities of music and visual art. KO:MI, the solo project of Sanna Komi, showcases her cinematic and atmospheric sound. Performing with a 6-member chamber group of strings, woodwinds, percussion, guitar, and electronics.
Finally, Symbiocene, a collective featuring Anni Elif, Pauli Lyytinen, Paavo Malmberg, and Jarmo Saari, explores the environmental crisis, with music that combines jazz, chamber music, world music, and ambient.
The Other Sound will present the following artists:
ganavya, Apni aka Surabhi Saraf, Keval Shah, Andrea Belfi, Passepartout Duo, Li Yilei, Ada Aik & Choir: 5 Hours of Light – Scented Concert, Antti Lötjönen & Kalle Kalima, Harri Kuusijärvi & Arttu Nieminen, KO:MI, and Symbiocene.
