Symbiocene
Symbiocene is Anni Elif, Pauli Lyytinen, Paavo Malmberg, and Jarmo Saari. The quartet draws inspiration from Ninni Perko’s dance piece Silentopia, in which the four musicians participated as composers, sound designers, and performers between 2022–2024.
The piece offered fresh perspectives on the environmental crisis, conveying messages of hope and agency while remembering extinct species at venues like Espoo Theatre, Dance House Helsinki, and Turku City Theatre. The music also works beautifully on its own, delivering a dynamic journey that deals with the numerous complex feelings around the unfortunate current crises of mass extinction.
Symbiocene’s members have a track record of creating noteworthy, often experimental, and award-winning music on albums, festivals, theatre stages and films. They’re also known from groups such as Elifantree, Jarmo Saari Republic, Pauli Lyytinen Solo, and Yona. Their first album, carrying the title of Perko’s performance, will be published in May 2025.
