Patti Smith (US)

Patti Smith is a monolith, an Artist with a capital A, above all trends and genre designations. She rose to prominence as a poet, singer and songwriter around the mid-1970s, just seconds before the punk explosion. Musically, she drew from the classic rock of the baby boomer generation, but the attitude was more in tune with the new crop of bands coming CBGB’s and other New York dives. For the new generation she was what William S. Burroughs was to the beats — an elder stateswoman, above the daily fracas. Smith has remained a respected icon all through the decades, while remaining true to herself and her audience. Her early works are unassailable classics.
