ESG (USA)

New York band ESG is a living piece of dance music history. From playing at the opening night of Manchester’s legendary Hacienda to the closing night of equally legendary Paradise Garage in New York, ESG have remained one of the all-time cult-bands.
ESG’s stripped-down art-funk has made an impact on disco, house, hiphop and dance punk alike. Their influence can be heard on today’s artists from The Rapture to Peaches, and they have been extensively sampled by countless hiphop artists from Wu-Tang Clan to Beastie boys and LL Cool J to Jay-Dee.
The band was formed in Bronx in the end of 1970s by the Scroggins sisters Deborah, Maria, Renee and Valerie and their friend Leroy Glover. Their first ep was released in 1981, produced by the legendary Joy Division producer Martin Hannett. Thirty years on and ESG remains a family affair with sisters Renee, Valerie and Marie along with Renee’s daughter Nicole and Valerie’s daughter Chistelle. Their latest album Keep on moving was released last year.
