Terry Callier (USA)

terrycallier.jpg

The Chicago-based singer and songwriter Terry Callier, 62, is a legend of soul music. Yet, for most of his career, Callier has remained virtually unknown, unlike his childhood friend and musical figure of huge proportions, Curtis Mayfield.

Terry Callier’s 1960’s and 1970’s recordings for labels like Prestige, Cadet and Elektra combined delicate folk-aesthetics and majestic soul in a way that has rarely been matched in the genre. But commercial success avoided him, so in 1983, after a career spanning 20 years, he quit music.

Fast forward to the UK of the 1990’s, where Terry Callier’s soulful music had been discovered by top rare groove DJ’s like Gilles Peterson and Russ Dewbury Soon Callier made his first live performance in over 10 years and a critically acclaimed comeback record, Timepeace, followed suite in 1998.

Since then, Terry Callier has appeared on record with Beth Orton, 4Hero and Koop in addition to releasing several solo albums. Terry Callier’s appearance at the Flow festival will be his first in Finland – and one not to miss!
